Care guide

Caring for ZZ 'Raven'

ZZ 'Raven' stores reserves of water in it's stems and rhizomes, giving it the ability to survive intermittent watering. Overwatering should be avoided because the rhizomes are susceptible to root rot. Don't be shy to let ZZ 'Raven' dry out completely before giving it a full watering. Although ZZ 'Raven' is know for the ability to tolerate low light conditions, they will thrive in medium indirect light.

Low light light

ZZ 'Raven' can handle low light conditions and can thrive placed in a room with east or west facing windows. Remember that low-light doesn't mean no-light and just because ZZ 'Raven' is shade loving, it doesn't mean that it won't enjoy some medium indirect light now and again.

Moderate watering

Water ZZ 'Raven' when the top half of the soil is dry to your finger. Give ZZ 'Raven' a full soak until water drains out the bottom of the pot.

Average 40-60% humidity

ZZ 'Raven' thrives in average household humidity between 40 and 60%. A humidifier may be required in the dryer winter months -- keep a lookout for crispy leaves.

Fertilize Every 4-6 weeks

During its active growing season (spring to early fall), fertilize ZZ 'Raven' with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer as instructed. Apply the solution to well-watered soil, avoiding foliage contact. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks, reducing or pausing in winter. Watch for signs of over-fertilization, adjusting the routine if needed.

About the genus

About Zamioculcas (ZZ)

Zamioculcas zamiifolia, commonly known as ZZ plant or Zanzibar gem, is a resilient and low-maintenance house plant belonging to to the Araceae (Aroid) family. Native to eastern Africa, ZZ has gained popularity as an indoor houseplant due to its striking appearance and ability to thrive in less than ideal conditions.

The ZZ plant is characterized by its glossy, dark green, pinnately compound leaves and fleshy stems. The plant stores reserves of water in it's stems and rhizomes, giving it the ability to survive intermittent watering. In addition, ZZ plants are know for the ability to tolerate low light conditions, making them a good choice for areas with poor lighting conditions.

Propagation of ZZ plants is primarily done through rhizome division. This process allows for the creation of new mature plants that can immediately survive on their own. ZZ plants will also propagate from leaf cutting but it is a notoriously long process. Place the collected leaflets in water and wait for new rhizomes to grow.
