Care guide

Caring for Ficus elastica 'Ruby'

Place Ficus elastica 'Ruby' in bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sunlight which can harm its leaves. Let the top half or of soil dry before watering thoroughly. Ficus elastica 'Ruby' isn’t too picky when it comes to humidity, so it will be happy in average household humidity.

Keep your ficus in a comfortable room temperature range of 18-24Β°C, away from drafts and extreme temperature fluctuations. Sudden changes to temperature and lighting can cause leaves to drop so it’s important to keep Ficus elastica 'Ruby' in consistent conditions.

Regularly prune to shape the plant and promote new growth, removing yellowing or dead leaves, as well as overcrowded branches. Feed your Ficus with balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Bright indirect light

Ficus elastica 'Ruby' likes consistently bright indirect light. Think of placing it near a south-facing window but make sure it never receives direct light which can cause Ficus elastica 'Ruby' to burn.

Moderate watering

Water Ficus elastica 'Ruby' when the top half of the soil is dry to your finger. Give Ficus elastica 'Ruby' a full soak until water drains out the bottom of the pot.

Average 40-60% humidity

Ficus elastica 'Ruby' thrives in average household humidity between 40 and 60%. A humidifier may be required in the dryer winter months -- keep a lookout for crispy leaves.

Fertilize Every 4-6 weeks

During its active growing season (spring to early fall), fertilize Ficus elastica 'Ruby' with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer as instructed. Apply the solution to well-watered soil, avoiding foliage contact. Fertilize every 4-6 weeks, reducing or pausing in winter. Watch for signs of over-fertilization, adjusting the routine if needed.

Propagate by Air Layering

Remove a small piece of bark from a woody branch of your Ficus elastica 'Ruby'. Wipe the wound clean and cover with a moisture-retaining medium (such as moistened sphagnum moss) enclosed in plastic wrap. Ensure the medium is kept moist. Once roots develop, the rooted section can be separated and transplanted.

About the genus

About Ficus

The Ficus (fig) genus is vast, comprising hundreds of species many of which are cultivated as houseplants. Originating from areas like Asia, Africa, and the Pacific Islands, these plants have adapted to diverse environments.

For instance, the Ficus benjamina, also known as the Weeping Fig, is native to Southeast Asia and Australia. Ficus elastica, or the Rubber Plant, hails from Southeast Asia as well. The Ficus lyrata, commonly referred to as the Fiddle Leaf Fig due to its large violin-shaped leaves, is native to West Africa.

Each species has its own unique growth patterns, leaf shapes, and care requirements, but they all share the appeal of bringing a touch of nature into indoor spaces.
